The prosecution has urged the court to hand down a 15-year prison sentence to Julius Malema after his conviction related to the unlawful discharge of a firearm.

The Economic Freedom Fighters leader appeared at the East London Magistrate’s Court for sentencing proceedings.

State prosecutor Joel Cesar argued that a lengthy sentence would serve as a strong warning and act as a deterrent to others who may consider similar actions.

He criticised Malema’s conduct, stating that the accused deflected responsibility and blurred the line between legal accountability and political rhetoric. Cesar further alleged that intimidation tactics were used, including leveraging public support.

According to the State, the court must send a clear message that discharging a firearm in a public setting places lives at risk and carries serious consequences. Prosecutors maintain that firm sentencing is necessary to reinforce respect for the law and discourage reckless behaviour.
